Liberal democracy is a form of government

Liberal democracy means a state that is also a democracy. In practice, this means the country accepts as common foundations freedom of expression and religion, freedom of assembly and association, the rule of law, and individual self-determination, which the state must not infringe upon.

The word "liberal" in the concept of "liberal democracy" indicates meeting the criteria defined by political liberalism.

The idea of liberal democracy is ancient. The ideological roots of liberal democracy trace back to the late 17th century. The word "liberal" as an adjective in the 18th century emphasized equality and the notion that no person should be subjected to domination or be dominating.

The English philosopher John Locke (1632–1704) wrote in 1690, forming one of the foundational pillars of liberal ideology:"Beings of the same kind and rank... should also be equal among themselves without subordination or subjection." (Second Treatise of Government, 1690)

Baron Montesquieu’s (1689–1755) theory of the separation of powers was at the heart of early liberalism and modern liberal democracy. The separation of powers – legislative, judicial, and executive – is kept strictly separate to prevent the abuse of power.

The two key aspects of liberal democracy are individual and minority rights and the constitution.

Liberal democracy as a verbal concept in its modern form is much younger.

A synonym for the concept of liberal democracy is also Western democracy or constitutional democracy
