Liberalism as an Ethical Conviction

Liberalism is among the oldest ethical schools of thought.

It has been shaped by numerous thinkers whose common starting point is the understanding of the human being as a moral entity. According to this assumption, humans are capable of making value judgments.

These judgments derive their justification from the characteristics of human nature, from the shared abilities and capacities of all individuals.

This also ensures the universality of these judgments.

The liberal view is fundamentally centered on the individual, while at the same time creating the conditions for cooperation and moral responsibility toward others.

Liberal ethical principles rest on the notion of the human being as a moral entity. They safeguard certain rights for every individual, which others must respect.

A central principle is that a person must be free and equal in relation to others.
